How to Search the Brunswick County Court Docket
Start at the North Carolina eCourts Portal. Its Smart Search opens a public Case Summary, the state's online Register of Actions. Brunswick County has no separate county-built docket database; everything flows through this statewide route. One caution. A no-result search does not prove a case is absent. A record can be restricted, recent, historic, filed elsewhere, or better reached through the Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court.
Bring the strongest identifier you have. The Judicial Branch lists party name, record number or case number, citation number, attorney name or bar number, business name, cross-reference number, and nickname as accepted search methods. When statewide results run broad, apply the Brunswick County location filter. For a court-date question, check Search Hearings alongside the Case Summary. Then compare that result with the posted local schedule.
A Brunswick County docket search works best with focused inputs. The county filter, case type, and case number should all point at one file. Read any result together with current hearing information. If the Portal does not answer the question, the Brunswick County Clerk holds the local file. The Brunswick County court calendar supplies session context.
- Open Portal and select Smart Search for a public Brunswick County case.
- Search by a party name, case number, citation number, or another documented identifier.
- Use the location filter to narrow the Brunswick County court docket when needed.
- Open the matching Case Summary and read its events, assignment, hearings, and disposition together.
- Use Search Hearings and the Clerk if a live setting or an official copy matters.
Brunswick County Docket Search Fields
The Judicial Branch Portal guidance lays out the filters. These sharpen a Brunswick County docket search. Advanced filters narrow results by location, party information, case type, case status, and a filing-date range. The published broad categories are Civil Actions, nonconfidential Special Proceedings, Estates, and Criminal Actions. The guide does not list every current dropdown value. So treat a precise result as a lead rather than an exhaustive screen of every possible case.
| Portal field | Use for a Brunswick County search | Documented note |
|---|---|---|
| Party name | Find a known person or business on a public case | A wildcard can be used after the minimum characters in the official guide. |
| Record number | Open a particular Case Summary | Use the clerk-assigned number exactly when available. |
| Location | Limit statewide results | Select Brunswick County in the advanced criteria. |
| Case type and status | Refine a broad result set | Broaden a narrow search before assuming a case is absent. |
Note: Portal's live controls can change, and the official guide did not publish a complete list of every dropdown option.
What a Court Docket Shows
A Brunswick County Case Summary is a public-facing timeline, not the certified court file. Portal groups its content under labeled sections. The list runs Case Information, Assignment Information, Party Information, Case Events, Dispositions, Hearings, and Financial Information when applicable. Those labels do real work. They help a reader tell a past filing from the next setting, and they separate a result label from a final certified document. Screen order can change. Not every case carries every public field or document.
| Case Summary | The public Register of Actions style timeline for a Brunswick County case. |
|---|---|
| Case Information | Case-level details to confirm against the selected result. |
| Assignment Information | Assignment-related information that accompanies the case record. |
| Case Events | Dated entries that should be read in sequence, not in isolation. |
| Hearings and Dispositions | Setting history and outcome information where publicly available. |
| Financial Information | Applicable public financial information, not a substitute for Clerk confirmation. |
Reading Brunswick County Court Dockets
Portal calls the detailed timeline a Case Summary or Register of Actions. Begin with the record number. Next read the assignment and status, then follow Case Events in date order. A hearing entry can linger in the history after a later change. So check Search Hearings and the current schedule too. Read any disposition before calling a matter complete. A pending label can still see later activity.
- Case Event
- A dated occurrence shown in the Case Summary timeline.
- Disposition
- A recorded case outcome or status result, which may not show every document.
- Hearing
- A court setting that should be checked for its current date, time, and location.
- Register of Actions
- The court’s chronological case activity record, presented online as a Case Summary.
The public case-number pattern runs two digits for the year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. The state's example is 21CR000003-910. It shows the system format only. The Clerk's electronic system assigns the real number, and the example does not establish a Brunswick County suffix.
Which Courts Keep Dockets
North Carolina's General Court of Justice has two trial divisions that matter for Brunswick County docket work. Superior Court District 15B hears felony cases. It also hears appeals from District Court criminal convictions and civil cases over $25,000. District Court District 15 is the usual starting court for misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, family matters, juvenile matters, and other statutory cases. Magistrates sit within the District Court system. They do not run a separate public docket office.
| Court or office | Brunswick County docket coverage | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Superior Court District 15B | Felonies, larger civil cases, and District Court criminal appeals | Portal or the Clerk’s office |
| District Court District 15 | Traffic, misdemeanors, small claims, family, and statutory matters | Portal or the Clerk’s office |
| Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court | Unified local case files and docket records for both divisions | Portal, Clerk counter, terminal, or department line |
A District Court criminal appeal is tried anew in Superior Court. That route explains Portal labels like Transfer to Superior Court or Trial De Novo. It does not turn a search result into legal advice.
Brunswick County Court Docket File Route
One mix-up shows up often here. People treat the county-government public-records office as the keeper of a court file. It is not. The Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court holds cases filed in Brunswick County. The official contact directory sorts its working lines. These lines cover Civil, Criminal and Traffic, Estates, and Special Proceedings. That functional split routes a request; it does not create separate clerks or separate case systems.

When an online document is missing, the Clerk counter and paper file remain the local route. Public self-service terminals at clerk offices can search criminal, civil, special-proceeding, and estate information. Ask the department that holds the case before paying for a copy or certification.
Finding Court Dates and Settings
A Brunswick County court date can surface in more than one official channel. Portal Search Hearings is the current lookup for name, location, and time. Smart Search supplies the Case Summary history. The county also publishes administrative schedules and links civil and criminal calendar applications. Each source answers a different question. Older entries deserve caution. Before relying on one, compare the current hearing result, the docket history, and the posted schedule.
The Brunswick County court calendar details the search sequence and the local schedule categories. If a change seems uncertain, call the Clerk department handling the case. A current official answer beats a past calendar PDF or a historical Case Event.
Brunswick County Court Calendar Channels
Brunswick County court calendars travel through more than one channel. The local administrative schedules split the work into labeled sessions. These include Criminal Docket Management Sessions, Motion and Plea Calendars, Probation Violations, Trial Calendars, civil stand-by trial and motion/plea calendars, and judge assignments. A category can read "none at this time." Keep that in perspective, though. A posted session plan never promises that every named case gets called on the listed date.
Search Hearings is the statewide tool for pulling one hearing out of the pack. It takes a case number, party name, business name, attorney name, attorney bar number, judicial officer, or courtroom. There is also a pair of official calendar applications. The Civil Calendars and Criminal Calendars apps cover their own sides of the docket. Brunswick's local rules add a continuance policy. They also include a Calendar Request form for work that needs one.
A continuance only moves a date. It is not a dismissal. Brunswick County sets no automatic reset rule. Confirm any changed setting against the current Portal result and the right Clerk line before you rely on it.
Public Access to Dockets
Access to Brunswick County court records has a legal floor and a practical ceiling. Portal lets anyone view public material anonymously. Still, it is not the official record. That title belongs to the Clerk's county file. When an item stays offline, the public terminals at the courthouse and plain in-person inspection still work. Remember, too, that law withholds some records, so a search that comes up empty may reflect an access limit rather than proof that no case exists.
Key Rules:
G.S. 7A-109 requires clerks to keep records, files, dockets, and indexes and generally allows public inspection unless law bars access.
G.S. 132-6.2 addresses available media, copies, certification, actual costs, and prompt responses.
G.S. 7A-308 supplies the Clerk fee authority for copies, certification, exemplification, and criminal searches.
G.S. 7B-3000 protects juvenile records from ordinary public inspection.
Brunswick County Restricted Court Records
Plenty of Brunswick County cases show a Case Summary on Portal. Juvenile cases do not. Sealed or expunged matters, some protective-order details, and confidential materials all sit behind their own limits. Portal masks personal data rather than exposing it. Registering an account changes none of this. My Cases is just a saved list, not elevated access for ordinary users.
Qualifying personal information sometimes sits in a public court file. AOC-A-250 tells the Clerk about the public posting. It is a narrow redaction route. Filing it does not reopen the merits of anything. The Clerk can walk you through the procedure. The Clerk cannot advise on eligibility or predict how a pending case ends.
The Clerk and Docket Records
Portal moves fast, but the Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court keeps the actual record. Need a human? Call Civil at 910-253-3914. Criminal and Traffic answers at 910-253-3902, Estates at 910-253-3904, and Special Proceedings at 910-253-3905. The courthouse opens Monday through Friday. Hours run 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., per the official courthouse page.
Copies cost money. A clerk-prepared copy runs $2 for the first page of each document. Every additional page or fraction costs 25 cents. A certificate under seal is $3, and an exemplification runs $10. Confirm those figures with the Clerk for your particular record. An anonymous Portal search itself carries no fee.
Brunswick County Court Docket Transition
Enterprise Justice/Odyssey went live in Brunswick County on February 3, 2025. The switch came through the coastal Track 7 conversion. The Judicial Branch announcement ties the change to Portal, File & Serve, and the statewide case-management overhaul. Portal is where the public reads. File & Serve is where required filers file and serve.
A January 2025 Brunswick administrative order described digital access to post-conversion filings and files. Limits on audio and visual reproduction stayed in place. That order explains why a digital Case Summary now anchors a Brunswick County docket search. It does not hand the Clerk's job to a vendor, and it does not open every case document to the public.
Brunswick County Specialty Court Dockets
Brunswick County runs three recovery-court programs. Judicial Branch links cover Adult Treatment Court, Mental Health Treatment Court, and DWI Treatment Court. Treat them as supervised interventions, not as stand-alone docket websites. The underlying court case still lives in the Clerk and Portal system. Treatment records, health data, and juvenile material can carry separate access limits. A program meeting does not create an open calendar or its own searchable case file.
For figures, the 2026 Judicially Managed Accountability and Recovery Courts report lists Brunswick's 2025 numbers: referrals, admissions, enrollment, and exits. Those are program-scale figures, not a count of Brunswick County docket cases. Safe Babies Court began enrolling Brunswick families in July 2024. Child-welfare and juvenile material tied to it may be confidential. Never present it as a public schedule.
The report counts 70 Adult JMARC referrals in 2025. Mental Health JMARC drew 49 referrals. DWI JMARC drew 30. None of the Brunswick programs take outside-county participants. Together the figures sketch a real local court initiative. They name no one, and they do not turn program activity into a public docket total. A case's availability still depends on the normal record rules and the Clerk-held file.
Want the underlying case? Start with the standard Brunswick County Portal and Clerk route. For program questions, contact the court program or the Clerk directly. Skip the hunt for a separate docket product.
Court Dockets by City in Brunswick County
Five towns lead Brunswick County's incorporated places. The 2020 Census population list ranks Leland, Oak Island, St. James, Boiling Spring Lakes, and Shallotte on top. None of those five towns runs its own municipal court docket or citation lookup. Instead, a state citation or state case filed anywhere in the county lands in the single countywide District Court system. The Portal plus the Clerk's office handle the lookup. Town Hall still holds separate city records, though. Police reports, parking notices, and utility files stay at the municipal level. They never enter the court docket stream.

Brunswick County City Case Routing
All court business for Brunswick County's 19 municipalities runs through one centralized operation in Bolivia. So the town named on your citation does not create a separate court register. Your case number is the real key. Filter by Brunswick County in Portal. Then call the Criminal and Traffic Clerk line when you need the next hearing date or the original file confirmed.
Oak Island paid-parking citations are the one narrow exception. Those are municipal civil notices. They are not state traffic case dockets, and they differ from an officer-issued state citation in a way that matters. The city pages sort out local distinctions like this. The Brunswick County traffic court records page stays on the state-court citation route.
