Look Up St. James Court Dockets

Start with the North Carolina court system for any St. James court docket lookup. St. James Town Hall does not keep those files. Citations, criminal charges, and other state cases live in the courts, and the Brunswick County Clerk holds the original record for each one. The statewide portal is the easiest place to pull public case information when it is open, and you can run a St. James court docket search by name, citation, or case number from there. Always confirm the current hearing details before you plan around a date. Calendars shift, and a listed day is only a schedule entry, not a result.

St. James Sheriff Citation Routing

One local fact sets St. James apart. The Town's comprehensive plan states where police protection comes from: the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department, not a Town police department. So a St. James state citation may start with the Sheriff. It may also come from another state law-enforcement officer. That still does not make St. James Town Hall the court. Once filed, the St. James court record runs through the Brunswick Clerk. The Portal and District Court handle it too.

The distinction helps you find the right record. Town Hall answers administrative questions about St. James. An officer's report has its own law-enforcement channel. But a St. James court date, charge, or outcome belongs in the state-court file. Whoever wrote the citation, ordinary North Carolina traffic matters stay with the same court. The same goes for misdemeanors.

The St. James Municipal Court

The heading above does not confirm that a St. James municipal court exists. The Town posts no court, municipal docket, or ticket-payment portal. North Carolina's state docket has no independent municipal court tier either. The Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court holds District Court and Superior Court records filed in the county. That includes St. James state cases.

A St. James traffic infraction or misdemeanor normally lands first in District Court. Superior Court takes felonies, certain civil matters, and criminal appeals tried anew. So frame a St. James search as a state case in Brunswick County. It is not a Town municipal-court case.

St. James Town Hall Record Limits

St. James Town Hall shares a complex with the Homer E. Wright Event Center. The building serves municipal government well enough. But it is no courthouse. St. James runs on a council-manager government and incorporated on July 1, 1999. Those facts give local color. Yet none of them moves a St. James court file away from the county Clerk.

Use the Town's contact information for Town services, not for confirming a state court hearing. Town Hall hours, a council page, or an event calendar will not show a court schedule. Check a current St. James setting in Search Hearings. The Case Summary, the Brunswick local calendar, or the right Clerk department work too.

Town Hall sits at 4140A Southport-Supply Road and keeps stated weekday office hours. That location still cannot replace the Brunswick Clerk's court-record counter. The same limit applies to the council and department pages. They explain Town operations and local context. A St. James Case Summary, court date, or certified copy stays inside the county court system.

The 2020 Census counted 6,529 St. James residents. That figure explains why St. James gets its own city page. It does not explain a separate docket system. A St. James court search still turns on the county filing. The state court division and the official Clerk record matter just as much.

The clean way to sort it out is to ask who holds the record. Town Hall manages St. James municipal business. The Brunswick Clerk maintains the St. James court file. The citation may have come from the Sheriff or another officer.

St. James Court Dates and Settings

A St. James court date shows up in the state case record. Search Hearings takes a case number, party name, business name, attorney name, attorney bar number, judicial officer, or courtroom. The Case Summary has its own hearing area too. Trust that live hearing information over any prior notice or old schedule. Resets and transfers can shift the current setting.

The Brunswick County schedules page posts the official county calendar. For a question about a specific case, call the Criminal/Traffic Clerk at 910-253-3902.

St. James Case Status Terms

Every St. James search result wears a status tag from the Portal. Criminal and infraction filters include Pending, Disposed, Archived, Pending Expungement, Remanded, Transfer to Another County, and Transferred to Superior Court. Treat these as system words, not the whole story. The full picture of a St. James case sits in the Case Summary timeline. The Clerk's official file holds it too. Read the label. Then check the docket events behind it.

Case Summary
Portal's public summary of the St. James case events, based on the Clerk's record.
Hearing
A listed court appearance; Search Hearings is the current time and location route.
Disposition
A recorded outcome or result category that should be read with the event history.
Trial De Novo
A new Superior Court trial after a District Court criminal appeal.

State record numbers follow one published pattern. A two-digit year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier make up the form. 21CR000003-910 shows the state format only, and it is not a St. James case or a local code.

St. James Traffic Tickets

Most St. James state traffic tickets go to Brunswick District Court, whichever agency wrote them. Even a Sheriff's deputy's ticket lands there. Smart Search takes the citation number where offered, or a name or case number instead. Search Hearings then shows the court record. The Case Summary timeline fills in what the docket search misses. The Town offers no traffic payment or docket route.

Some St. James state tickets can be waived. The citation and the current waiver list decide eligibility. For an eligible online payment, the Judicial Branch advises allowing at least 24 hours before the appearance time. Any appearance happens in the charging county. The Brunswick County traffic court records page gives the countywide payment and appearance details.

St. James Waterway Context and Court Access

St. James spans 9.2 square miles, with 2,450 conserved acres along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, according to its published local materials. That setting invites a wrong guess. Coastal charm does not create a courthouse. Brunswick County centralizes court operations in Bolivia and serves 19 municipalities in all. No Town courthouse is needed for a routine state case, because the unified Clerk and eCourts system covers the whole county.

Geography does not change access rules either. Anyone can run a public Portal search from anywhere. Inspection and copies work differently. That process turns on the Brunswick county of filing and the Clerk's custody of the record. Where in St. James the event occurred simply does not matter.

Where St. James Cases End Up

St. James state cases proceed into the same two trial divisions used throughout Brunswick County. District Court takes routine traffic and misdemeanor matters. Superior Court gets the heavier load. Felonies, certain civil cases, and District Court criminal appeals are heard there as trials de novo. The Town lists no docket of its own.

Docket flow: St. James state citation or case › Brunswick County Clerk of Superior Court and eCourts Portal › District Court › Superior Court for the applicable case or a trial de novo appeal.

Start with Portal for any public St. James case. Bring official file questions to the Clerk instead. The Brunswick County court docket page explains the shared county court structure in more detail.

St. James Superior Court Appeals

A St. James misdemeanor appeal does not stay in a Town courtroom. It moves to Superior Court for a brand-new trial. Portal labels like “Transferred to Superior Court” or “Trial De Novo” can flag that move. Labels do not replace the case events. Confirm the next hearing through Search Hearings or the Clerk.

Superior Court also hears St. James felonies and Brunswick civil claims over $25,000. One Clerk serves the whole county. A St. James court-file search never requires picking a separate city clerk for criminal, civil, traffic, estate, or special-proceeding records.

Public Access to St. James Court Records

North Carolina law and the Brunswick Clerk's custody govern public St. James court information. Portal allows anonymous searches of a public Case Summary. Still, Portal is not the official record. The Clerk handles authorized inspection, copies, and certification. Town records, sheriff records, and court records stay separate systems even for one incident.

Key Rules:

G.S. 7A-109 makes Clerk-maintained dockets, records, and indexes generally available for public inspection unless law says otherwise.

G.S. 132-6.2 governs available copy media, certifications, fees, and prompt response obligations.

G.S. 7B-3000 restricts public inspection of juvenile records.

Sealed, expunged, juvenile, and protective matters, plus certain personal information, stay off the public internet. Registering for Portal unlocks no St. James exception.

St. James Court File Fallback

A Portal miss does not mean a St. James case is absent. Timing plays a role. So do paper-held older files, restrictions, and search filters. The Brunswick Clerk's Criminal/Traffic line is 910-253-3902; Civil is 910-253-3914. Public terminals and the original file serve as the lawful fallback. Only the Clerk of the filing county certifies.

A state public-record request is the wrong substitute here. NCAOC policy names the county Clerk as custodian. For a personal-identifier concern, AOC-A-250 goes to the Clerk as a narrow redaction route. It changes no merits of a St. James case.

When a record is public but hard to find, bring the Clerk your sharpest identifier. Details matter. A citation number, record number, filing county, and known hearing date can separate one state case from another. The Clerk's civil, criminal, estates, and special-proceedings desks are separate contact channels. Custody itself stays unified at the Brunswick County level.
