Searching Cases by Name
Start at the statewide North Carolina eCourts Portal. That is the live public route into Brunswick County cases. Open Smart Search there. Give it the most specific public identifier you can. A party name works. So does a record or case number, a citation number, an attorney name or bar number, a business name, a cross-reference number, or a nickname. Name-only searches can pull results from more than one county. Set Brunswick County as the location filter before trusting any result as local.
- Open Smart Search through the Portal and choose the Brunswick County public case-search route.
- Enter the known Brunswick County party name or another supported identifier. For a person-name wildcard, use at least three last-name characters plus an asterisk, and at least one first-name character plus an asterisk where used.
- Use Advanced Filtering Options to narrow the Brunswick County case search by location, party criteria, case type, status, or filing-date range when a broad search returns several matters.
- Open the result that matches the Brunswick County case identity, then read the Case Summary rather than relying on the first search hit alone.
What follows covers only the controls the state has published. Buttons, sorting, pagination, reset behavior, export options, and full dropdown lists sit outside that official guidance, so treat anything else on the live screen as undocumented rather than rule-based.

Brunswick County Case Search Filters
Smart Search is a statewide system rather than a dedicated Brunswick County website. With common names, that difference matters. Advanced General Options can narrow results by location. Advanced Party Search Criteria covers party name and date of birth. Case Search Criteria adds case type, case status, and a filing-date range. The broad published types are Civil Actions, nonconfidential Special Proceedings, Estates, and Criminal Actions.
Go broad first when the case type is a guess. Stack a tight type and status together and the matching Brunswick County record can vanish from view. Once a public Brunswick County case shows up, open its Case Summary. Verify the case information, parties, assignment, and dated events. The Brunswick County judicial landing page sends court users to this same statewide system. It points there for current case and date work.
Note: A filtered result is a search aid. It does not promise that every public or restricted court record is available online.
Searching by Case Number
For a Brunswick County case search, a full record number is often the cleanest key. The public format has four parts. There is a two-digit year, case-type letters, a six-digit sequence, and a three-digit county identifier. The Judicial Branch offers 21CR000003-910 purely as a format illustration. It does not make 910 the Brunswick County identifier. Only the Brunswick County Clerk's system assigns the sequence and county code.
Searching a partial Brunswick County number? The published rule calls for at least four characters followed by an asterisk. The type letters give useful cues but never settle the result. CR marks a criminal case. IF marks an infraction-only case in the traffic materials. Remember that a case number is never a disposition. Check the full Brunswick County Case Summary for actual case status and events.
Brunswick County Case Search Number Format
The full number makes a Brunswick County case search easiest. Yet its last three digits should never be guessed from a county name. The state publishes 21CR000003-910 only as a generic example. Match Brunswick County results against the case information and parties in the returned Case Summary. Do not match them against a presumed county suffix.
No full number in hand? Start with a supported name, citation, or attorney identifier, then narrow by location. Treat the number as a search key and nothing more. It says nothing about what the court decided.
Brunswick County Case Search Hearings
When the question is where and when a current Brunswick County setting sits on the calendar, use Search Hearings. It accepts a case number, party name, business name, attorney name, attorney bar number, judicial officer, or courtroom. Smart Search is different. It opens the fuller Brunswick County Case Summary and its event history. Search Hearings gives the current hearing location and time. The Case Summary separates an earlier event from the next setting.
To cross-check the local calendar, Brunswick County posts session and assignment materials. They appear through its local administrative schedules. A posted session schedule does not confirm any named party. Compare it with the Brunswick County hearing result. If a setting seems to have moved, call the correct Clerk department.
What a Case Search Returns
Smart Search hands you the Case Summary, also called the Register of Actions. Think of it as a public, near-real-time summary of Brunswick County docket information drawn from the Clerk's record, not the certified original. The official description names the areas that follow. It promises neither a fixed screen order nor a downloadable document for every event. So scan the live public result for whichever area you need.
| Case Summary and Case Events | The Brunswick County chronological register and dated case activity. |
|---|---|
| Case Information | Brunswick County case-level information to confirm against the search result. |
| Assignment Information | Assignment-related information for the Brunswick County case. |
| Party Information | Brunswick County people or entities organized by their case role, subject to public-access limits. |
| Causes of Action | Identified for applicable Brunswick County Civil, Family, Probate, and Mental Health matters. |
| Hearings | Brunswick County hearing information in the Case Summary; use Search Hearings for the current location and time route. |
| Dispositions | Brunswick County recorded outcomes or result categories that need to be read in context. |
| Financial Information | Brunswick County information shown when applicable; a complete money ledger is not promised. |
| Documents | Some Brunswick County public records and documents may be available, but a document image is not guaranteed for every event. |
A result can nail down a case identity yet leave document questions open. For the paper or official file, follow the local Clerk path on the Brunswick County court records page.
Brunswick County Case Search Result Limits
Treat a Brunswick County case search result as a summary, not a full picture. The Portal describes the Case Summary areas but leaves out some headers, columns, and placement details. Nothing on the screen guarantees a complete document set. Read the actual result before relying on it, and check anything that matters against the record itself.
Access rules can also limit what you see. A Brunswick County case search result may list an event yet show no public image for it. That gap is normal, not an error. When you need the paper itself, the Clerk file is the route for a document inquiry or a certified copy.
Brunswick County Judgment Search Limits
Judgment questions have their own Portal tool. NC Judgment Search indexes Brunswick County judgments. It works from a party name or case number. You can narrow it by case type, status, location, and judgment date. Results show the case number, disposition status, and index date and time. Parties and any judgment comments appear too. Handy, but limited. It is not the full docket, and it cannot stand in for a hearing calendar.
Once a Brunswick County judgment-index hit appears, open Smart Search. That gives you the fuller Case Summary and timeline. A judgment entry, a citation payment screen, or the first name on a list is never the whole record. Two steps keep each Portal tool doing its own job.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Brunswick County has no separate county-built case-search system. The one public Portal layer is statewide, with Brunswick County as a filter. Locally, the Brunswick County Clerk holds the court file. So the real choice is between a statewide online search narrowed to Brunswick County and the county records route when a case needs inspection, a document, or clarification.
| Statewide Portal with Brunswick filter | Brunswick County Clerk route |
|---|---|
| Searches publicly available case information statewide, then narrows to Brunswick County. | Holds the official county case file for Superior and District Court matters filed in Brunswick County. |
| Provides a Brunswick County public Case Summary or Register of Actions and current search functions. | Provides Brunswick County public-terminal access, original-file inspection within lawful limits, and paid copy or certification path. |
| Best for a Brunswick County name, number, citation, hearing, or judgment-index search. | Best when a Brunswick County result is missing, a file must be inspected, or an official copy is needed. |
Brunswick County Case Search Access
Anyone can search public Brunswick County records in the Portal without an account. Registering adds the My Cases feature for saving cases. It grants no broader access. Elevated access goes only to people with statutory authority. File & Serve belongs to the same eCourts system but serves a different purpose: it handles filing and service, not public case lookup.
Brunswick County joined eCourts in February 2025. That shift explains why Portal is now the public search reader, and why a case-file question may take the digital record or a call to the local Clerk. For a public search, start in Portal rather than in File & Serve.
Brunswick County Case Search Status Labels
A Brunswick County case search may show status labels such as Pending, Disposed, Archived, Transferred to Superior Court, or Pending Expungement, depending on case type. Think of them as search categories. They sort results; they do not settle anything. Reducing a case to one label, without reading the events, hearing information, and disposition area together, invites mistakes.
Criminal and infraction matters add two more published Portal terms: Pending-Reported to DMV and Voluntarily Dismissed with Leave. Their meaning lives in the case record. A public label may not answer the record question. Then a Brunswick County Clerk inquiry is the right move.
Access and Restricted Cases
Public does not mean everything. Juvenile records stay closed to public inspection under G.S. 7B-3000, except for authorized persons or a court order. Expunction-related files are confidential under G.S. 15A-151, so an expunged case will not appear in a public Portal search.
Other matters carry their own limits: unreturned criminal warrants, sealed or confidential cases, some protective-order information, and certain domestic-violence data. Public results mask the month and day of birth, and Social Security numbers never display. Keep this in mind. A missing Brunswick County case-search result is not proof that no matter exists.
Brunswick County Case Search Fallbacks
When Portal shows no expected case or document, you still have solid options. Use a public self-service terminal at a Clerk office. Inspect the original file in the county of filing. You can also call the Brunswick County Clerk department that holds the file. Criminal and Traffic is 910-253-3902, Civil is 910-253-3914, Estates is 910-253-3904. Special Proceedings is 910-253-3905. The official Brunswick County contact directory publishes those routes.
The Clerk is the custodian for a Brunswick County court file. A broad NCAOC public-record request covers Judicial Branch agency records instead. So it is not the best replacement for a direct question to the local Clerk about a county case file. Note: Lean on the public terminal and Clerk route for older, paper-held, confusing, or restricted records. These are cases the Portal cannot display.
